Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard. Eli [the priest] thought she was drunk. . . . “Not so, my lord,” Hannah replied, “I am a woman who is deeply troubled. . . . I was pouring out my soul to the Lord.” 1 Samuel 1:13,15

Hannah had a great burden, a great desire, and a great hurt all mixed together in her heart. What did Hannah do about it? She came to pour her heart before the Lord! Her husband could not help her, neither could her family, nor her best friend. It is our human nature to pour our hearts out to people we love when we have a difficult situation. Yet, in this passage we see Hannah supplicating, pouring her heart before the One who could actually grant her request. She poured her heart before her Creator, her loving and unlimited God.

Jesus says to us in Matthew 6:6, “But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Wow! You see how well Jesus knows our tendencies to talk to the ones we see, but those we see are limited. Jesus gives us clear direction to go to our heavenly Father. Our friends and family are limited, but Jesus is unlimited!

Let’s examine ourselves. Are we coming daily with our hurts or petitions, pouring them before our heavenly Father in prayer as Hannah did? Who can grant our request or comfort us in our pain? Who is unlimited? Let’s receive Jesus’ invitation and make a plan to follow His Word. From now on when we have an issue on our heart, let us bring it to God, our unlimited heavenly Father, in prayer before we talk to our closest “seen” and limited friend. Yes, we can talk to our limited loved ones about our heart issues, but let us do so after we have poured our hearts before our heavenly, loving, unlimited Father! Let’s be like Hannah and pour out our hearts to our loving God!

My heavenly Father, I see Hannah pouring out her soul to You. Help me to do likewise in every area of my life. I want to pour out my soul to You, hear Your voice, and obey You gladly. Speak to my heart today. I pray in Jesus’ name, amen.

  1. The Lord know how much we can deal with and at times, He provides trusted confidants for us to support and deal with what we face as pastors wives at church and at times He removes it so that we can be intimate with Him.

    In our old church that we pastored, when we were going through trails towards the end,the Lord provided a pastor wife and another dear friend for me to bond and healed. That happened 10 years ago.

    But now with the last church that we shepherded, the storms that we went through were huge at times but He reminded me that He’s in charge of the storms. I would come Him more and more like Hanna pouring my heart to Him knowing that He can calm the raging sea and He is faithful to carry us through every afflictions , fire and water and bring us to His own abundance.

    Praise Him and the privilege to suffer for His glory.
