When Sadness & Sorrow Bubble Up – When Ministry and Personal Life Collide – Part 2

This week, I want to continue the conversation about when our ministry and personal lives collide. In the past few days, I have been processing my own messy emotions. God has been with me—He is with me now. He is with you as well.

It seems that everywhere I turn, there are ministry families under attack. Illness, depression, and conflicts within and without continue to seriously overwhelm us, and yet Psalm 34 speaks clearly to where you and I are to run when this life is too much!

Take refuge in the Lord, not others or your own expectations!

“I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.” — Psalm 34:4

The pressures of ministry can be overwhelming. There are spoken and unspoken expectations—being hospitable, leading women’s groups, attending every event, supporting your husband, and raising a godly family under public scrutiny. It can be easy to feel that your worth is tied to how well you meet these expectations.

But Psalm 34 reminds us to seek God’s Refuge, not people’s approval. David didn’t say, “I sought affirmation and found peace.” He sought the Lord, and He answered.

God sees the nights you cry out in exhaustion. He understands the loneliness of ministry. He hears your whispered prayers. He is your refuge, your safe place, your strength. When expectations feel crushing, run first to Him.

Trust God’s Goodness in the Unseen

“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18

Ministry comes with sacrifices that few people see. The difficult conversations, the burdens our husbands carry home, the members who leave without explanation, the way criticism affects your family—all of these are part of the unseen weight of ministry life.

But God sees. He knows when our hearts are heavy, when we feel weary, when we’re fighting to keep trusting. He is near. We are never alone in this calling. When we feel unseen, unappreciated, or weary, let this truth anchor our souls: God is close to us. He delights in us, not because of what we do, but because we are His daughters.

Some things to practice – to guard your heart and encourage you.

  1. Daily Worship – Whether through music, prayer, or Scripture, start your day by focusing on God’s goodness, not ministry pressures.
  2. Community & Encouragement – Seek friendships with other ministry wives who understand your journey and can uplift you.
  3. Guard Your Heart Against Bitterness – Disappointments will come, but keep your heart soft toward God and people.
  4. Prioritize Your Spiritual Health – You are more than a pastor’s wife—you are a beloved daughter of God. Invest in your personal relationship with Him.
  5. Set Healthy Boundaries – You can’t meet every expectation. Trust that God, not you, holds the church together.
  6. Get away for a Refresh Retreat – You need to have the voices of other ministry wives.

Pray this Prayer – I’ve been praying.

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your goodness and faithfulness. This ministry life has joys and struggles, but I choose to trust in You. When I feel weary, be my refuge. When I feel unseen, remind me of Your nearness. Help me to taste and see Your goodness every day. Strengthen me to serve with joy, love, and grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Final Encouragement

Dear sister, you are seen, valued, and loved in ministry. Your service matters and your faithfulness will not go unnoticed by the One who called you. Keep tasting and seeing His goodness—He is your refuge and strength.

As we continue this Lenten season, will you seek the Lord above all else – shaking off and letting go of this world’s expectations? Will you seek Him who died for you and Whom you are serving!

Reflection:

  • Are you seeking refuge in the Lord or in people’s approval?
  • What burdens do you need to surrender to God today?
  • In what areas of ministry do you feel unseen or weary?
  • How can you remind yourself that God is near and sees your sacrifices?
