Walk the Talk . . . When You Are Busy

I almost missed God the other day. It had been one of those days where my “to do” list could easily have filled my entire weekly calendar. Late in the afternoon, my office phone rang. The receptionist announced that someone was waiting to see me. Glancing at my calendar, I realized that I had no appointment scheduled. Slightly annoyed at the interruption, I went to the lobby to greet my unexpected guest. Waiting there was a young woman and her teenage daughter. “I am sorry that I came without an appointment,” the young woman began. “I have been trying to get enough courage to come see you for several weeks. Could I have just a few minutes of your time?”
Once in my office, the woman began to unfold her story. Six months earlier, her husband had been brutally murdered, an unsolved crime with the trail growing cold. She and her daughter had been left alone to try to cope with the broken pieces of their lives. A believer, she really just wanted me to assure her that God had a purpose for her life. After spending some time talking about her goals and mapping a course for the next few months, we prayed, hugged, and they left.
The young woman came to my office thinking that she needed to see me, when in fact I really needed to see her. I needed to be reminded of the blessings of God-interruptions. What at times can appear to be an inconvenient intrusion is actually a divine interruption. Marilyn Hontz wrote these challenging words, “Invite God to interrupt you. If your heavenly Father wanted to, could He interrupt you at any time during the day to ask you to do something with Him?”[i] Invite God to interrupt you today. You have no idea what kind of blessing or adventure awaits you.
Lord, order my day according to Your agenda, not mine. Interrupt my day as You desire. I entrust myself to Your all-knowing plan and pray that Your will would be done on earth as it is in heaven in my life today. Amen.
I never thought about God “interrupting” my busy life…I always felt that I was the one being too busy and God was at the bottom of the priority list of things that had to be done. Looking back at some of the busiest days, I can see where He did “interrupt” in some way, which at the time I thought was just another hurdle to jump over. I pray that I can see these interruptions more, especially when I start to lose focus.
