Taking Responsibility for the Choices We Make–Lesson 6

Memorizing Romans 8:26-39

  1. Read these verses in their context in your Bible. Read all of Romans 8.
  2.  Read Romans 8:26-39 aloud, 3 times a day.
  3. Discuss these verses in prayer with God. Invite Him to help you commit these verses to memory.
  4. Divide the verses into phrases: (see pages 110-112 in Taking Responsibility for the Choices We Make for the entire passage from the New Living Translation) Make flash cards out of brief phrases and practice adding a new phrase every few days. Here is a start in the New Living Translation…
    • And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness.
    • For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for.
    • But the Holy Spirit prays for us
    • with groanings that cannot be expressed in words.
    • And the Father who knows all hearts
    • knows what the Spirit is saying,
    • for the Spirit pleads for us believers
    • in harmony with God’s own will.
    • And we know that God causes
    • everything to work together
    • for the good of those who love God
    • and are called according to His purpose for them.
    • For God knew His people in advance
    • and He chose them, to become like his Son,
    • So that His Son would be the firstborn
    • among many brothers and sisters.
  5. Always say the reference at the beginning and end of your memory work.
  6. Write the part of the passage you’ve memorized, then print the rest of it from your Bible or our book. Recognize that not only are you “hiding these words in your heart” but you are also thinking on these things daily. Our minds can fill with so many things—why not fill them with God’s Word?!
  7. When you’ve memorized the passage, record yourself and post it on social media! This will inspire and encourage your friends.

  1. This was one of the most powerful lessons. It is very practical and easy to understand. I was able to apply it to my current situtation. Just knowing God and understanding His ways is comforting. However, knowing the tricks and attacks of the enemy propels me to study His word with fervency. When the enemy attacks, to recognize the source of the attack and not take things so personal or blame others. As the title of the book states, “take responsibilty for the choices we make,” It is difficult for me at times especially when I know someone is doing something to be malicious. The journey of being a Christian is not for the faint at heart. I am truly developing my spiritual life and becoming more of a mature Christian. God Bless you for this bible study!
