Wisdom from Above

But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. James 3:17 (nkjv)

This verse shows the contrast between wisdom from above and false earthly wisdom. The word pure means clean and it knows nothing of evil. Purity is not tainted by sin. The wisdom from above is peaceable and it shows gentleness and a willingness to yield. It is full of mercy and good fruits and it shows no partiality.

What a huge difference we can see between this verse and the previous verse. Verse 16 is filled with self-centeredness, confusion, and every evil thing. James is showing us in verse 17 what it looks like to live your life with true wisdom that is from God. God’s wisdom helps us live a life that is pure, gentle, full of mercy and good fruits, and without hypocrisy.

A hypocrite is someone who is not real. The word hypocrisy is an actor’s term; it comes from the world of drama. When a Greek actor played a part on the stage, he was called a hypocrite. In Romans 12:9 Paul wrote, “Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good” (nkjv).

God’s wisdom brings forth fruit, and this fruit is full of good things. This true wisdom from God will build in us a peaceable spirit full of love for one another. This kind of loving and gentle spirit is willing to yield to others. True wisdom—God’s real wisdom—will make us happy to be disciplined by the Holy Spirit. True wisdom from God blesses others; it does not cause confusion. It stands on the truth of God’s Word. God’s true wisdom shows mercy and forgiveness.

Heavenly wisdom is willing to yield. It is flexible and considerate. Consideration for others is the opposite of self-centeredness, and it should be our goal to show consideration and mercy to others. I prefer this kind of treatment from others, so in return I should be gentle and forgiving. It is very important that we learn to forgive others. Holding on to hurt will create in us a hardness of heart that will in turn cause us to become bitter and unyielding. We should be willing to forgive others, even if it’s not our fault.

Dear heavenly Father, I pray that You will give me gentleness and mercy. I know that these qualities come only from You. I am nothing without Your grace and love. In Your name, dear Jesus, I pray. Amen.
