The Great Comforter!

Week 24, Thursday

Diane Nix

O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far away. . . . You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head. . . . I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence! Psalm 139:1-2,5,7 (nlt)

Maureen had waited and waited. The first pregnancy was a miscarriage. The next was an ectopic pregnancy. Each miscarriage was a wound of confusion. What was God allowing? Her fourth miscarriage was extremely devastating. The loss of yet another child seemed unbearable to Maureen, her husband, her family, and her friends. Maureen was seemingly walking in a “grace” bubble. Her family watched and prayed.

Her earthly daddy decided to make the trip to visit his youngest of six. This tender-hearted, gentle man knocked on her door and when she answered he simply asked, “How are you doing, baby?” At that moment the bubble burst and Maureen collapsed into the arms of her father. Her husband who had been watching from a distance instinctively came and helped her to a place on the couch. Her daddy joined her and Maureen buried her head in her daddy’s chest and sobbed. He sat and comforted her for what seemed like hours and she allowed herself to pour out her grief upon her daddy.

God had provided her someone with “skin on” to help her to bear the wounds of her heart. Earthly daddies were meant to be the picture of our Abba Daddy God. In truth, it rarely happens like that. Yet the fact remains that God’s heart for His daughters is very tender. The psalmist declared that God keeps track of all of our sorrows and He collects all of our tears in a bottle. Though our Abba does not remember our sin, He has recorded each of our sorrows in a book. He knows us. His heart breaks for us and in the midst of the darkest days of our lives, He will comfort us. And when we don’t know what to pray or the sobs are choking our words, Abba Daddy has sent the Holy Spirit to make intercession for us with words that are indescribable.

God of comfort, I praise You for having a heart that loves me. Thank You for Your tender heart. Thank You for being there when I don’t realize it and when I do. Thank You for catching my tears. I praise You for keeping no record of my wrongs but writing my tears and sorrows in a book. Oh, God, You are my life! Amen.

  1. 2nd Corinthians 1:3-4 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort. who comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort those in any trouble with comfort we ourselves receive from God. This verse is why we are still in the ministry! He never wastes a hurt! Thanks for these words of encouragement!
