Super Mom

“Many women do noble things but you surpass them all. Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.” Proverbs 31:29-31

Super Woman and Super Mom… isn’t that the titles we loathe but still live in desparation to achieve? Titles that require precious time and energy.  In obtaining those titles is it our goal to impress others? Is our goal to be praised for what we accomplish? Sigh… if we take a good, long, hard look at the passage Proverbs 31 we might get our toes stepped on a bit. Sister, I have a sneaking suspicion that  the “noble” part of that verse goes by the second defintion in the dictionary. You know the one that talks about showing high qualities of moral character like courage, generosity or honor. Not the “noble” that means being distinguished by a rank or title. I know, I know… we all wanted to claim nobility with the crowns we deserve based off that verse! Sorry to burst your bubble! And another thing, while it is very important to take care of ourselves, our beauty is only temporary. And one more thing, that acknowledgement and praise that we crave…..We really need to wait for that until the city gate.

Judith Edwards has a reality check for those who are trying to be Super Moms. In her book, Super Mom Has Left the Building… Being a Proverbs 31 Woman in a 21st Century World, Edwards raises the question as to what is the heart of this widely known scripture passage?   She offers encouragement for moms to leave behind super mom myths.  This book consists of fifteen chapters entitled:  Supermoms Have Maids, Supermoms Compete in Mrs. America Pageants, Supermoms Have Perfect Children, and Supermoms Climb Mountains. Judith says, “Perhaps you will find freedom to become more of what God intended you to be and less of the supermom others think (or at least you think they think!) you should be.” Let’s ban together and throw off our capes!

So have your say.  How are you doing with your “Super Woman/Mom” image?  Any suggestions.  I would love to read your comments in the forum or here.  Remember when you click on the forum if you are not signed in you will need to do so in order to post a comment.
