Our Provision

She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins. Matthew 1:21

Before the birth of my first grandchild, I daydreamed about who she would look like. Would she have her mother’s natural curls and dark brown eyes? I wondered what attributes she might have. Would she have her father’s keen mind? But when she was born and expectation became reality, she far surpassed my wildest dreams. One evening I was drying her hair—no, she did not get her mother’s curls—while she looked at an American Girl doll catalog. She looked up at me with her big brown eyes and asked, “Mimi, do you think Papa would buy me a Bitty Baby doll?” What do you think Papa’s response was? Of course! He bought her the doll for Christmas! He loves her!

However, our love for our children and grandchildren can in no way compare to the matchless love of God the Father. For even before the world was spoken into being, our omniscient God knew that mankind would choose to go its own way—to rebel against Him. Nevertheless, He created us for relationship with Him, knowing what it would cost Him—the death of His Son. Just as He provided a sacrifice for Adam and Eve to cover their nakedness after the Fall, God promised to send One who would become the sinless sacrifice who would cover us with His righteousness. Paul explained, “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21).

Because of our fallen, sinful condition, none of us can stand before a Holy God. Yet He made the provision for us. He fulfilled His promise by sending that babe of Bethlehem to take on the sins of the world. The angel announced, “She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21). And through faith in Jesus, we can go into God’s presence. Paul summarized the good news: “In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence” (Ephesians 3:12).

This Christmas season enter boldly into God’s presence with the garments of salvation and the robe of righteousness covering you. The God-man, Jesus Christ, is your righteousness. Worship Him!

Holy God, thank You for Your gift of love, the Lord Jesus Christ. I come before You wrapped in His righteousness. I worship You. Amen.
