“I Am Who I Am”

God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am’ has sent me to you.”

Exodus 3:14

“I am who I am.” I love this self-description God gave Moses. While to some people it may seem as if God left something unfinished by giving Himself such a name, to me it is a perfect image of Him. God could have said, “I am holy,” “I am gracious, “I am just,” “I am love,” “I am eternal,” etc., and, of course, any of these descriptions would have been true. However, by not qualifying the “I am” statement with any such adjectives, God is saying that He is all of these things and more. He is the total embodiment of love, truth, wisdom, mercy, compassion, eternity, grace, and holiness. Through this powerful self-description, God is also saying, “I was, I am, I always will be all of these things.” Therefore, God is constant through all ages.

I am reminded as I reflect on God’s proclamation “I am who I am” that He is a God of absolutes. Both His character and His Word are certain and unshakable. Throughout the Bible, there is never a time in which God’s character is not consistent and perfect. Beginning in Genesis and ending in Revelation, unfailing patterns of God’s character emerge and they remain unchanged.

The power of God’s Word is likewise as enduring and dependable. When He speaks, it is so. Therefore, when I read something God says in His Word or when He speaks to me in that still small voice, I know I can rely on it totally and completely, with no reservations or doubt.

“Always,” “unfailing,” “The Lord will,” “faithful,” “all,” and “every,” are just a few of the words the Bible uses to refer to God’s character and His promises. I mark these in my Bible as I read them so that I may be reminded daily of “I am who I am.”

Father, You are the great “I am.” I know I can stand on Your character and Your Word because You are unchanging and trustworthy. Allow me to see Your holiness in new ways each day so that I may be more in awe of You. Produce in me more of Your love, truth, wisdom, mercy, compassion, grace, and holiness so that I may be an absolute reflection of You in my life as well. Amen.
