He Is Coming Again

Week 51, Weekend
Marge Lenow

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6

Every year my husband erects a Christmas sign in our front yard with Isaiah 9:6 on it. He strategically places a spotlight to highlight its message. One year the sign was stolen—a teenage prank, perhaps, or the work of one who did not appreciate its message. Several days later, the sign was returned, broken and battered—no doubt the result of a guilty conscience. Undeterred, my husband simply ordered another sign with the same prophetic message written more than seven hundred years before Jesus was born.

Through Isaiah, God announced His intention to provide a Savior to redeem mankind, one who would one day rule on the earth. His redemption plan was etched in history before man was ever created. It began in the heart of God and came to life when Jesus became flesh as the babe of Bethlehem. He lived a sinless life becoming the spotless, sacrificial Lamb for you and me, sprinkling the mercy seat with His own blood as our Great High Priest. When death could not hold Him, He ascended to the right hand of God and serves as our Advocate.

As if this wasn’t glorious enough, there is a final chapter. Jesus Christ will reign as King of kings and Lord of lords forever. The angel foretold it to Mary: “He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end” (Luke 1:32-33). Heaven also resounds with the message in Revelation: “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he will reign for ever and ever” (Revelation 11:15).

Jesus is coming—first to retrieve His saints, then to set up His thousand-year kingdom. Satan’s doom has already been sealed, his punishment secured, and Jesus will triumph over this evil world system. Then Jesus will reign eternally in heaven. He will stand forever as the undisputed King of kings and Lord of lords. Worship Him!

Lord Jesus, You are the eternal, supreme ruler of the universe. I praise You. Amen.
