Spiritual Hall of Fame

In Hebrews 11, we see a list of men and women who were commended for their faith. Even while they walked through great difficulties, they had great faith. Some were destitute, stoned, chained, and put in prison. They were commended for their faith, yet not one of them received what had been promised—the coming of Christ. Each one was found faithful, and that pleased God.

As I read the chapter and thought about who I knew that might belong on the list, two people came immediately to mind—my parents. I have found them to be faithful as they survived the Great Depression, buried a son and three grandchildren, have gone through health issues, and have a marriage of almost seventy years. They are two people who have endured great hardships and yet, by faith, continue to walk with the Lord.

Another whom I would submit to the list of spiritual heroes is Pastor L. R. Pearson. He too was a survivor of the Great Depression and served in World War II. After the war, he surrendered his life to ministry, attending college and seminary. I served with Pastor Pearson and his wife for several years. When someone complained about the church or was critical or mean spirited, he never condemned or held a grudge. He was a man who never compromised his integrity. He ministered to others unlike anyone I have ever known. He stood at my bedside after I lost my babies and presided over their memorial service. Out of his ministry came four preachers. Two received their doctorates. One has served as a military chaplain at West Point and the Pentagon. Another is a pastor of a megachurch. Today, at the age of ninety-two, Brother Lee Roy is the primary caregiver to his wife of more than seventy years whose memory has long faded. He cares for her faithfully and tenderly, with great love and devotion, and with the same integrity he has always lived his life.

As you reflect today on Hebrews 11, whose name would you submit to the hall of fame? Who have you found faithful? Would you be listed as one who has been found faithful?

Thank You, Lord, for those names mentioned in Hebrews 11. As I look back at those who have walked incredible journeys and been found faithful, I must ask myself, would You be pleased with my faithfulness? Amen.
