Choosing the Right Destination

Week 26, Friday

Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go. Joshua 1:7 (nkjv)

The destination we desire determines the road we travel. If I choose to head north on I-99 from where I live I will be able to see my grandchildren in Fresno, but if I choose to head south on the freeway I will end up in Los Angeles. Where I want to go always determines the road I must take. Why would our spiritual life be any different? We are wise to ask ourselves where we want to be going in life and to choose the road that will take us to our desired destination. If our desire is to achieve loving, healthy relationships and to live with a sense of peace and contentment, we must choose the road of obedience to God’s Word.

Choosing the right road on our own can be difficult. Proverbs 14:12 says, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death” (nkjv). There are times when a certain way appears to be right, yet it may be taking us to unforeseen disaster. God, whose knowledge has no limit, sees what we can’t and knows where each road ultimately leads. All of us want success in life, but we must ask ourselves if we are choosing to obey God’s Word or following our own path. The road of obedience is always the road that leads to spiritual success and fulfillment.

Lord, I know that today, like every day, I will be faced with many choices. At the beginning of this day, I choose to obey You when I come to those forks in the road where my natural desires and reactions might be different than Your instructions for me. Give me the power and grace to choose according to Your ways in all that I say and do. In Jesus’ name, amen.
