Lesson in Courage, Part 2

For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline. 2 Timothy 1:7

Now that we have discovered the blueprint for courage, how do we apply it to our circumstances? Verse 8 of Joshua 1 tells us exactly how. We apply it by keeping God in the center of our circle of influence, in our mouths, minds, and in all matters. The Bible is alive, relevant and appropriate for every situation. Diving in every day will bring a fresh perspective and clear direction.

Additionally, a daily dose of awe, fear, respect, and recognition of just who God is in this world and in our lives will cause us to consider our flippant attitude about Him. Is it wise to put away His influence in our daily decisions until we “have time” to consider Him? Coming to every day with a fresh understanding of His equity, justice, holiness, and faithfulness will remind us of the power to which we have access. To be in the grip of an overwhelming God should leave us standing in awe of His desire to use us to accomplish His plan.

Now we are beginning to see that courage is not all that impossible to gain. As the Lord commands strength and courage for the third time in Joshua 1:9, He has now shown us how to accomplish it. We rely on His plan and His presence. Then, finally, He promises that He is in it with us to the finish line. Every twist and turn, setback, and challenge does not surprise Him. He will not get discouraged, and He will not become terrified. That means that we also do not have to bow to these distractions.

So, there we have it! Courage is neither a trait in our DNA, nor a gift to only a few. Courage is a command that comes with a promise from our heavenly Father. It is yours to claim and exercise because you claim God’s Word as your blueprint. Courage is discovered by staying persistently in Scripture, daily uncovering God’s provision and presence in the tasks He sets before you. The celebration is sure to come because He is in it with you all the way to the finish line. And, with those whom you admire, you can now say, “I am a woman of courage!”

Thank You, oh Lord God, for showing me that when You call me to Your plan, You prepare me for the journey. I know that, in Your power and by Your strength, You will see to my success when I follow Your plan. Amen.
