Turn On the Light

Imagine what it would be like to live in a world without any electricity or even simpler lighting like kerosene or storm lamps. When night falls and the sun has set, the darkness would be complete. On occasion when I’ve been hiking in the mountains of Poland, far from a city, town, or road, I have been in almost complete darkness. When I was a young lady I loved to hike in the wilderness areas of my home country to get alone with God in the midst of the fabulous nature He created. It was so refreshing. But it was also essential that I have light with me. Without it I would be totally lost at night. All that was available to me was a pocket flashlight. In a world in which there was no light, the support of my pocket “torch” (to use a good British term) was absolutely essential.

It provided me with enough light to see safely down the path. It helped me to get back to my camp. It offered security in the midst of a dark and potentially threatening world and surroundings. My pocket flashlight may not have lit up all of the countryside around me but it provided me with enough light to keep me from danger and to find my way home.

In the same manner, but with spiritual emphasis, the psalmist reminds us that the Word of the Lord is a light and a lamp to our feet. In a world that is dark and forbidding and offers us no truth for our spiritual lives, His Word—the Bible—shows us where to safely put our feet.

The important point for all of us is to consider the Bible a spiritual light—it must be read and applied to be useful. Its truth becomes relevant only when it is absorbed, believed, and practiced. A lamp or a flashlight, as important as they are, must be switched on. May it be the case in my life and yours that God’s truth will always be used!

Thank You, Lord, for the Bible and the light it sheds on my path. Thank You for the hope I have in Your Word. I know that the steps of a good woman are ordered of the Lord. Amen.
