Undistracted Devotion
Distractions. As a woman of God, they are all around us. The ministry is full of distractions. Other people’s distractions. Our own family distractions. Church distractions. Denominational distractions. Political distractions. Health distractions. Financial distractions. Emotional/psychological distractions.
Ministry life is full of opportunities, responsibilities, and demands. While many distractions are not sinful in themselves, they can pull a ministry wife away from her relationship with Christ, her family, her calling, and her God-given priorities.
Let’s face it. We can be pulled in every direction except the ONE direction that will give us lasting peace. This battle is worth addressing in the hot summertime, before our fall and winter schedules are completely obliterated and we are consumed with entertaining the masses, church schedules, and perhaps just a small space carved out to celebrate with the family. Would you consider carving out some space to sit before our God and let Him speak?
Let’s Practice Staying Focused on What Matters Most
Check out the following ways we can get tripped up with distractions.
I pray that the following list will be a challenge to each of you, as it has been to me.
1. The Distraction of Comparison
It is easy to compare your ministry, your marriage, your gifts, or your church to someone else’s.
Scripture: “Oh, don’t worry; we wouldn’t dare say that we are as wonderful as these other men who tell you how important they are! But they are only comparing themselves with each other, using themselves as the standard of measurement. How ignorant! “— 2 Corinthians 10:12 (NLT)
Truth: God has called you to be faithful, not identical to another ministry woman .
Reflection Question: Am I celebrating God’s work in others, or secretly wishing for their assignment?
2. The Distraction of People-Pleasing
Ministry wives often feel pressure to meet everyone’s expectations.
Scripture: “For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.” — Galatians 1:10
Truth: You cannot please everyone, but you can honor God.
Reflection Question: Whose approval am I seeking today?
3. The Distraction of Busyness
Many ministry wives become so busy serving Jesus that they neglect spending time with Jesus.
Scripture: “Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful.” — Luke 10:41–42
Truth: Ministry should flow from intimacy with Christ, not replace it.
Reflection Question: Have I spent more time preparing for ministry than being with the Savior?
4. The Distraction of Worry
Concerns about finances, church conflicts, children, health, or the future can consume our thoughts.
Scripture: “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” — 1 Peter 5:7
Truth: What keeps you awake at night is already in God’s hands.
Reflection Question: What burden do I need to release to the Lord today?
5. The Distraction of Offense and Hurt
Ministry often involves criticism, misunderstandings, and disappointment.
Scripture: “Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.” — Hebrews 12:2
Truth: If we focus on our wounds, we lose sight of our Savior.
Reflection Question: Am I rehearsing the hurt or remembering God’s faithfulness?
6. The Distraction of Social Media and Technology
Phones and screens can quietly consume time and attention.
Scripture: “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time.” — Ephesians 5:15–16 (ESV)
Truth: What captures your attention often shapes your heart.
Reflection Question: Is technology helping me grow closer to Chris, or is it distracting me from Him?
7. The Distraction of Neglecting Your Marriage
Sometimes ministry becomes the priority while the marriage relationship suffers.
Scripture: “Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.” — Ephesians 5:21
Truth: One of the greatest testimonies of ministry is a healthy, Christ-centered marriage.
Reflection Question: Have I intentionally invested in my relationship with my husband this week?
8. The Distraction of Losing Sight of Your First Love
Over time, ministry can become routine,e and service can replace devotion.
Scripture: “Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.” — Revelation 2:4
Truth: Jesus desires your heart before He desires your service.
Reflection Question: Am I more in love with ministry or with Christ?
A Prayer for Ministry Wives
Father, there are many voices competing for my attention. Help me discern what is important and what is merely urgent. Guard my heart from comparison, worry, busyness, and the desire for approval. Teach me to sit at Your feet before I serve at Your table. Keep my eyes fixed on Jesus, my heart anchored in Your Word, and my life centered on Your purposes. May my ministry flow from a deep and abiding relationship with You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Key Verse
“Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.” — Hebrews 12:2
When distractions come—and they will—remember that the goal is not to do more, but to stay close to the One who called you.
