The Ebb and Flow vs. Balance in Ministry

For everything, there is a season and a time for every matter under heaven. Eccl. 3:1 (ESV)

Ministry life doesn’t move in straight lines. It moves like the tide—ebb and flow, rising and retreating, bustling with activity in one season and painfully quiet in the next—one moment, you celebrate family victories and activities, church growth through baptisms, and spiritual breakthroughs. The next, you’re navigating conflict, burnout, or discouragement.

This rhythm isn’t failure—it’s life.

As a woman in ministry, you live in that tension every day. There are seasons when you can pour yourself fully into women’s ministry or serve alongside your husband joyfully. And there are seasons when rocking a fussy baby in the back of the sanctuary feels like the most you can offer.

Both are ministry—both matter.

When you and I try to “balance” everything, we often live off-balance. I fear that this will lead us to a place of exasperation. I see women in ministry who are so fatigued and at their wit’s end because of trying to “balance” life in ministry.

God is not measuring your worth by your productivity or visibility. He walks with you through every season—the full, dry, fruitful, and weary. His grace is not seasonal; it is steadfast.

When ministry is thriving, rejoice and give thanks. When it feels like you’re just holding things together, be still and trust that God is working in the quiet, too. The tide will rise again. He is faithful in every flow—and just as present in the ebb. It might feel like He is distant, but He is always near. He sees you and desires for you to be still and allow Him.

The ebb and flow of ministry is inevitable. Ministry life is like the ocean tide. If the oceans stopped moving, then life on our planet, as we know it, would cease to exist. Ocean tides are significant. The ebb and flow of the tides impact our ecosystems and human activities and affect Earth’s climate and rotation. There is so much application to us in the lessons of ebb and flow.

Do you see it? Balance is not as important as learning the rhythm of the ebb and flow of ministry life. When the tide goes out, and life is not as full or trying, you learn to sit in the presence of the Lord and allow Him to feed you, refresh you, restore you, and ready you for the next tide to come in.

Questions for Reflection

  • What season of ministry and motherhood are you in right now—overflowing or empty, busy or quiet?
  • How have you seen God’s faithfulness in past seasons of change or uncertainty?
  • What might God be teaching you in this current ‘tide’ of your life?

Prayer

Father, thank You for being constant through every season of ministry and motherhood. When life feels full, please give me the wisdom to steward it well. When life feels quiet or difficult, remind me that You are still moving, still good, still with me. Teach me to embrace the ebb and the flow—not with fear, but with faith. Amen.
