Finish The race is not to the swift.

When growing up, I always heard teachers say, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” As a child, completing a task was an obvious goal. For example: Finish your homework, eat everything on your plate, and complete your chores.

The assignment given came with clear instructions. The composer of the given assignment was visible and available for any inquiries. When the task was complete, we were able to find out if it was satisfactory or unsatisfactory.

As we matured, the grading factors were broadened. We were deliberately given less information to complete the assignment. Even then, no matter what the grade or assignment, when the semester ended, we knew we were finished. We could count on those who were swift, strong, and wise. We learned to finish and finish well.

You may struggle with some things in life. However, in this journey called life, orchestrated by the Almighty God, some fail to finish. Ecclesiastes 9:11 says, “But time and chance happeneth to them all” (kjv). In the classroom, rarely is there someone who is deliberately trying to make you fail. Your opposition usually comes from within as you struggle to stay focused.

We have an Adversary who carefully orchestrates our demise. We struggle against God’s unseen hand that deliberately fights and covers us from the Enemy’s tactics. When we do not yield our lives to the Almighty God, we go around in circles and end up in the same place. We were never meant to start or finish without the careful guiding of the hand of the Lord. Hebrews 12:1-2 urges, “Let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith” (kjv).

Ten years ago I started a project that I believe has God’s hand on it. The process has been very slow. But in the midst of my limited abilities, I continue to walk by faith. There are times when I don’t feel equipped for the journey, but by the grace of God, I will finish.

If you are in the throes of life and uncertain of the path you have taken, continue forward in Christ. Finish strong in Him!

Lord, I thank You for already starting and ending my journey. Although things appear slow, I will continue in Your name. I desire to successfully finish as an encouragement to the brothers and sisters I leave behind. Amen.
