Letting Him Write Your Story!

By: Jennifer Mills

As I sit here at my laptop this morning reflecting on 15 years of ministry, I think back to my 22-year-old self—newlywed and on the cusp of such a beautiful journey of life and ministry. But, oh my goodness, that dewy-eyed newlywed had no idea what was to come. We’ve all heard the statement “hindsight is 20/20”. We see and can understand so clearly when looking in the rear-view mirror, but in the moment, when we are praying, seeking and leaning into the Lord for clarity and discernment, it’s hard to see the big picture.

Over the last 15 years of marriage and full-time ministry, if I’ve learned ANYTHING it has been to embrace the posture of “surrender” in my life. Surrender is so much more than that moment of salvation – in surrendering your life to the Lord. The Lord has taught me that it is a daily decision in my life. To learn to live surrendered to Him and to lay down control of my will, my plans, and my agenda that I have for my life and to embrace what it is the He has for my life, my family & our ministry. Surrender is easy when life runs smoothly, and things are going great, especially when you’re riding that “wave of momentum” in your spiritual walk and your ministry. But, what happens when that wave crashes down, and you find yourself walking through a wilderness where it feels like God has gone silent, disappeared, or forgotten you. It’s in these “wandering” seasons of life and ministry in particular that He can do His best work in us if we will lay down our panicked and anxious spirits, loosen our grip on the reigns of control, and in brokenness fall on our knees before Almighty God. We must trust that He is there, He is in control, and He is good even when our situation doesn’t “feel” good.

God never intended we base our faith on our feelings.

It’s in these moments He can take us to a new level of spiritual maturity, teach us something new about ourselves and our lives and calling. Most importantly, we learn something new about Him and His character that we can experience in a tangible way IF we will lean into what God is writing with our story. Even when we cannot see where He is leading or what the purpose is in what He’s orchestrating, He does and He sees how the pieces will come together.

Romans 8:28, “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.”

But it’s imperative that we understand that His ‘good’ that scripture speaks of here in Romans 8:28 is often different from our ‘good.’

And this is a good thing. Things may pan out differently than you thought, or doors you sincerely believed would lead to the good path He had for your life slam shut. But, as you surrender and submit to His authority in your life, then He can write a story that is ‘more than anything we could ask or think’ (Ephesians 3:20).

He is sovereign, holy, and perfect! He has our days numbered and the plans for our lives planned out before we were even born!

He doesn’t need our help; He just desires for us to surrender to Him in the process and give Him control of the pen, allowing Him to continue writing the story He chooses.

Perhaps to you, this may be nothing new or profound, but maybe the Lord just wants to remind you He sees you and He is writing a beautiful story with your life. He didn’t promise our lives would be easy. But He always promises He will be with us. So even when you do not understand what He is doing with your life and ministry – HE is faithful, HE is good, and we can TRUST HIM!

So, sweet friends, don’t lose sight of God’s sovereignty. Remember HE sees the overall picture; we don’t. Let go and allow Him to write a beautiful story on the pages of your life. There’s no better way to live than to surrender and watch Him work.
